Supplier obligations

Registering to supply and recording details once supplying are critical.

Number plates are identity documents

As identity documents, they are government regulated.

Suppliers are obliged to do a few key things:

1. Register with the DVLA and get your Register of Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS) Supplier ID

It costs £40 and is one simple form.

Check out our guide to Becoming a Number Plate Supplier.

2. Only supply British Standard compliant plates.

Failure to do this can mean a fine of £2,500.  All BNMA members only supply British Standard plates.

3. Keep records of every plate you supply.

Your BNMA member can supply you tools to help you keep records.

4. Make 3 years' records available to authorities

On request, you must be able to show 3 years' worth of number plate records to Trading Standards, the DVLA or Police.
