BNMA - The British
Number Plate Manufacturers Association
The BNMA - Who we are We are an organisation that
represents 95% of the UK's major number plate component and number plate
distributors to the trade.
What we do We ensure that all the products supplied
by our members meet the current British Standard. We discuss all new legislation proposed
by the Government, Department of Transport and the DVLA and its implementation.
We also discuss other
more general issues associated with the industry. This web site is intended to inform the
trade of all ongoing information that is relevant to them, and will affect both
them and the public. You
will often read reports in the press, or hear from representatives within the
trade, about issues relating to number plates. If you wish to check the
reliability of this information, just log on to this web site, which will be
regularly updated with current developments. You can also request further
information should you require it.
Update on Continuing Difficult Market Conditions Affecting the Supply of Plastics Used in the Number Plate Manufacturing Industry - 20th June 2011
One of the main drivers for the increased demand for Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) and its derivative, Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA), has been the Flat Screen Monitor Market which has taken a disproportionate share of PMMA output over the last 12 to 18 months. During May of this year there are signs that this market has slowed somewhat, but industry experts consider it unlikely that demand will slow sufficiently to ease pressure on prices as worldwide demand still outstrips production.
There are global plans to increase capacity of MMA and PMMA but they are not projected to come on line until late 2012 and into 2013.
There are of course other factors which are continuing to impact on contract pricing, such as a recent increase in Acetone of 25% in addition to increase costs of energy, packaging and distribution. These factors alone have increased costs by around 8% in the last month.

General Number Plate Policy
There has been general concern on issues regarding the supply of Number Plates in the United Kingdom for some time, and this is shared by BNMA. There has been a significant growth in criminal activity, which includes fake, cloned, stolen and altered plates. 33,000 number plates were stolen in 2007 whilst 2,000 “bilking” offences each day (drive offs from petrol forecourts) were committed and these predominantly used stolen or cloned number plates. This criminal activity has been driven by the ANPR Camera enforcement strategies, vigorously implemented by the Police Force.
The British Number Plate Manufacturers Association has been in discussion with Government Agencies regarding the regulation and supply of number plates in the UK. Topics under discussion include the introduction of security features in the reflective materials as used in many other European countries, and the system of recording on site production is also under review. |
